SIGNIFICANCE:
IT WAS BUILT FOR THE MADRAS & SOUTHERN MARATHA RAILWAY BY A BRITISH FIRM. THE SITE WAS EARLIER CALLED AS JAMBURA THOTTAM WHICH WAS PART OF AN OLD RAMPAT.THE CITY MAIN RAILWAY STATION,WHICH WAS LOCATED IN ROYAPURAM, WAS SHIFTED HERE.THE MADRAS RAILWAY COMPANY(ESTD.1845 ENGLAND),LAID THE 1st LINE IN SOUTH INDIA FROM MADRAS TO WALLAJAPET(NEAR ARCOT). THIS WAS OPENED IN 1856,3 YEARS AFTER INDIA`S FIRST LINE.
